How to Answer 'Tell Me About Yourself' in Tech Interviews
By TechQA Team•May 4, 2026
The Importance of Your Introduction
The 'Tell me about yourself' question is your elevator pitch. It's often the first question asked and sets the stage for the entire interview.
The Present-Past-Future Formula
- Present: Talk about your current role, your scope, and a recent accomplishment.
- Past: Briefly mention how you got there (previous roles, education).
- Future: Why you are looking for a new role and why this company is the right fit.
Example Pitch
"I'm currently a Senior Frontend Engineer at X, where I lead the development of our dashboard. Previously, I worked at Y... I'm looking to join Z because of your focus on AI-driven interfaces..."
Common Pitfalls
- ⏱️ Going on for too long (keep it under 2 minutes).
- 🚫 Sharing too many personal details.
- 🎯 Not tailoring it to the job description.
